Description:
12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6513 and #5842. #6513 is a GF-25A built by General Electric in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #5842 is an EP-20 built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. Their crews have received orders to proceed with their passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, whereupon #6513 will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up the Mountains. Visible on the right is a portion of one of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings.

Title:
PRR 12th Street Shop Area, 1973
Description:
12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during June of 1973. Shown here is the space that was once occupied by the Pennsylvania Railroad's 12th Street Car Shops, soon to be transformed into another mindless mall. Once upon a time, long ago and far away, this was the site of three active roundhouses and THE Altoona Works ~ where they made everything from steam locomotives and tenders to freight cars. Also visible at the far right is the Altoona Test Plant, where stationary steam locomotives were once tested at speeds up to 100 miles per hour on a dynamometer. Photo taken from the new 12th Street Bridge.
