With a head of steam, this massive and powerful 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive, DMIR #233, has completed another long drag of ore cars from Lake Superior. Built by Baldwin in January of 1943 (serial #64712), the loco lasted in heavy hauling service for almost 19 years before being sold for scrap in 1962. Specs - 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, massive engine wt of 699,700 lb and massive tractive force of 140,000 lb. The photographer was taken by Buckley. |

Coming around a curve near Two Harbors, MN, is Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 #233 with its long drag of ore cars from Lake Superior. Built by Baldwin, in January of 1943 (serial #64712), it was a perfect machine for hauling the ore cars from Lake Superior downhill to the Two Harbors, MN ore docks. Unfortunately, after serving for almost 19 years the loco was sold for scrap in 1962. Specs - 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, massive engine wt of 699,700 lb and massive tractive force of 140,000 lb. The photographer was Burdell L. Bulgrin. |
