TP 2-10-4 #616 - Texas & Pacific |
| Description: |
Beautiful roster shot by Harold K. Vollrath of the powerful 2-10-4 "Texas" type steam locomotive built by Lima in 1927 for the Texas & Pacific. Although the ATSF had an experimental 2-10-4 they built, the first mass produced 2-10-4 was for the Texas & Pacific. As a result, Lima refered to this particular wheel configuration as the "Texas" type locomotive in honor of the T&P. The particular wheel diameter size coupled with massive rods adn valve gears caused counter-balance problems that made the early 2-10-4's ride rough but they made up for it with much improved tractive effort. Specs - class I-1a, serial #7243, 63" drivers, 255 psi boiler pressure, 29x32" cyldinders, engine weight of 452,000 lb, impressive tractive effrort of 92,590 lb |

KCS E6A 24 |
| Description: |
When this shot was taken at Shreveport in 1964, KCS 24 was near the end of its career. In 1962 and 1963, the railroad had purchased five used E7's from the Maine Central, allowing it to retire its three remaining pre-war E-units: E3A 21 and 22 and E6A 24. The 24 was scrapped just a few months after this photo was taken. (approximate date of photo) |

T&P Train No. 22 |
| Description: |
At 10 p.m. Texas & Pacific train No. 22, the last remnant of the LOUISIANA EAGLE, was stopped at the new station in Shreveport, on its way from Fort Worth to New Orleans. We don’t know when this photo was taken, but it was between 25 September 1967, when the sleeping car was discontinued, and 17 December 1969, when the train made its last run. The new station was opened in 1963 along the main line on West 70th Street, just south of the Greater Shreveport Municipal Airport and just west of CUT OFF JUNCTION. This eliminated a 6-mile detour from CUT OFF JUNCTION to the old station at 104 Market Street and then back again, which added 55 minutes to train schedules. Inbound trains were turned on the wye at TS&N JUNCTION, just before backing into the old station. TS&N was the Texarkana, Shreveport & Natchez, which originally owned the T&P line between Texarkana and Shreveport. (approximate date of photo) |

This unusual paint scheme may have been an attempt at a Bicentennial salute dubbed the "Cryola' paint scheme. Looks more like a patchwork quilt or paint sample test than a Bicentennial salute, IMHO. SP-SSW Traffic Dept. |
| Description: |
The Espee-Cotton Belt Traffic Dept. was on Commerce Street, just north of the joint SP-SSW yard. The red brick building visible between the front of the Traffic Dept. and the large power pole was the former Illinois Central freigth station, and the ICG track running west off of the Red River Bridge passed between the two structures. Espee trains had to negotiate a sharp curve right behind the building, and it was destroyed by a derailment. |
