SP (T&NO) Train No. 12 |
| Description: |
Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans) train No. 12 – the NEW ORLEANS LIMITED – was boarding the carfloat MASTODON at Avondale, Louisiana for a ride across the Mississippi River and a connection with the Illinois Central. The train was about 12 miles from its destination at Union Station in New Orleans. No. 12 was an overnight train from Houston and included sleeping cars from Minneapolis (via Rock Island’s MID-CONTINENT SPECIAL), Houston and Lake Charles. This was one of 12 passenger trains which crossed the river here each day, but the ferry was discontinued in December 1935, when the Huey P. Long Bridge opened. The locomotive was P-6 class 4-6-2 built by Alco-Brooks in 1913 as the 926; it was renumbered 616 in 1923 and was sold for scrap at Houston in 1953. (date unknown) |

On 24 April 1955 elderly M-4 class Mogul 438 and T-28 Ten-Wheeler 695 were stored at Avondale Yard, just west of New Orleans, while 2-year-old F7A 373 was backing down onto train 241. The 2-6-0 had been built by Cooke in June 1900 as then 968, was renumbered 428 in 1901, then second 438 in August 1950, and was sold for scrap to Commercial Metals in Houston six months after this photo was taken. The 373 had been built in July 1953, was transferred to the Pacific Lines in November 1960 and was renumbered 6469, then it was retired in May 1968 and sold back to EMD; so the F7 was only on the roster for 15 years, while the Mogul lasted for 55! |

SP and MP Yards |
| Description: |
This view was taken from the vestibule of a high-level coach on the westbound SUNSET as the train left the Southern Pacific's Avondale Yard and crossed Avondale Garden Road. The SP MP15AC was switching in the railroad's Avondale Yard and the three MP geeps, on the other side of that Lincoln Mk IV, were on a northbound train in that railroad's Avondale Yard. Behind the three high-level coaches were dormitory-lounge 3395, diner 8035, 10-6 sleepers 2602 PACIFIC BEAUTY, 2629 PACIFIC RIDGE and 2695, and dome-observation 9253 SILVER LOOKOUT. In just a couple of minutes SDP40F's 568 and 542 would have their 10-car train up to the speed limit of 70. |

West Bridge Junction |
| Description: |
This was a view from a former Santa Fe high-level coach as Amtrak's westbound SUNSET dropped off of the Huey P. Long Bridge at West Bridge Junction. The tracks on the right lead into the Missouri Pacific's Avondale Yard, while the Southern Pacific's main line ran around the other side of that big fuel tank. The white structure to the right of the lower signal was the roundhouse at the Espee's Avondale Yard. |

SP Extra 3735 West |

The 3735 began life as Texas & New Orleans 439, which explained the lack of an oscillating light fixture. |

MWSCO 6 |
| Description: |
MWSCO – MidWest Storage Company – 80-ton GE number 6 was at the Missouri Pacific’s Avondale Yard just west of New Orleans. This 500HP locomotive had been built under GE serial number 17902 in June 1943 as U.S. Army 7857 for service at the Umatilla Ordnance Depot in Hermiston, Oregon. It went to the U.S. Navy as 65-00509 (in-house 6) before being sold to Eveready Equipment, and it subsequently worked for several owners. MWSCO 6 was coupled to an unlettered Alco S2, serial no. 73600, built in July 1945 as Rock Island 724. It had most recently been used by Continental Grain at the nearby elevator in Westwego until that facility exploded on 22 December 1977. It subsequently showed up at the Continental elevator in Milwaukee. |
