PRR G-5S, "Ten-Wheeler," c. 1953         
Here is the fourth of five photos via Edward Highland. Depicted here is an unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad G-5S (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheeler" dead-heading on the Long Island Rail Road. The photographer's name, the date, and the location are not recorded. Many thanks to Mr. Robert Hess for identifying this locomotive correctly.

Robert Hess General This is actually one of the P.R.R. G5s engines running on the Long Island RR. There are a couple of spotting differences to assist in identifying the two classes. On the G5s engines, the pilot beams are tapered at the ends; on the K4s engines the ends of the pilot beams are vertical. The K4s engines also have the whistle mounted to the back of the steam dome on the engineman's side. On the G5s (as seen in this photo), the whistle is mounted to the top ot the firebox near the safety valves. 10/16/2023 11:48:13 AM
