Hollidaysburg. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Herbert G. Frank, Jr., that was taken just West of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, perhaps in 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #117, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in December of 1917 and retired in October of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. It's stopped at the dwarf signal, but will shortly head toward the Wye Switches in Duncansville ~ where it will either turn right and head toward the yards in Altoona, or head up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. |
