Cool set. The E 44's (electric, 4400 HP) were built for the Pennsy by GE in the early 60's. The first 60(4400-4459) had Ignitron rectifiers, the last six(4460-65) had silicone diode rectifiers. GE later upgraded 22 units(4438-4459) with improved traction motors and silicon diode rectifiers, upping them to 5000 HP, designating them E44A. They were ultimately retired when Conrail pulled the plug on its electric operations in 1981. A handful-8, I think-went to NJ Transit for use on South Amboy train, to replace the aging GG 1's, which had cooling oil with PCB's, an environmental hazard. Then they found the E 44's had clearance issues in the Hudson River tunnels into Penn Station, which doomed them at NJT.
