Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 2 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9528 and two more F-3's whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9528 is an EF-15 built in July of 1948 and retired in July of 1965 after just 17 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set has just passed under the 24th Street Bridge pulling a merchandise freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. A portion of SLOPE Tower is visible just beyond the Bridge. ("Tchowee"; #17 of 39) |
