Hollidaysburg. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken just West of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, perhaps in 1955. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #117, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during December of 1917 and retired in October of 1959 after 42 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. It will shortly arrive at the Wye Switches ~ where it will either turn right and head toward the yards in Altoona, or head up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible in the distance is the Blair County Court House steeple, located in the very heart of Hollidaysburg. |
