Sitting on a Sunday morning in Conrail's Metuchin Yard in Edison, New Jersey, are a pair of EMD locomotives assigned to the Shared Assets (that is, Conrail) territory. As usual on Twenty-First Century Conrail, the power is split between Norfolk Southern and CSX. NS 5630 was built in July 1969 as Penn Central GP38 7702, which retained its number when PC was merged into Conrail. When Conrail was broken up in 1999, CR 7702 became Norfolk Southern 2894. The engine was rebuilt to "Dash 2" standards at NS's Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA, in March 2006, and renumbered 5630. (March 11, 2018) |
