Randy Curlin General From a newspaper clipping from March 30 1977 The historic Southern Pacific Railroad depot burned to the ground Monday night. Fire Chief Gregorio Madrigal said Tuesday the fire possibly was set. He said investigation of arson is being conducted by Fire Marshal Francisco Martinez, the volunteer fire department and police. The depot was abandoned officially about five years ago and was empt y at the time of the f i re. Madrigal said the firefighters had a few tense moments with a railroad car loaded with oil on the tracks nearby, as well as the big Texas Plastics Plant on the ot her «sirip of the depot The car loaded with oil was pulled down the tracks and firemen brought the blaze under control in about an hour without it spreading to the plastics plant. The city of Elsa was founded 50 years ago on the Southern Pacific Line as the only community between Edinburg and Harlingen on the Railroad 5/6/2016 2:03:54 PM
