Facing south on the Illinois Central Gulf (former Gulf & Ship Island) towards the Port of Gulfport, just south of the ICG yard. The ICG crossed the Louisville & Nashville's line from New Orleans to Mobile at the northwest corner of the depot. The station was built as a joint venture between the two railroads in 1903. Passenger service on the IC between Gulfport and Jackson, Mississippi ended on 17 November 1950; but up until the end there had been a Gulfport-Chicago sleeper which was handled by the PANAMA LIMITED north of Jackson. The L&N bought out the IC's interest in the building in 1960, L&N passenger service ended with the advent of Amtrak in 1971, and the railroad closed the agency in 1982. |
