I am not a SP expert, but I believe this "unit" is a former Krauss-Maffei hydraulic-drive unit. They were in the 9000 series when delivered. This unit was converted to a "camera" unit that was used to photograph the rail line from all different angles, hence all of the front and side cut-luts. These photos were used in the very first locomotive simulators to train engine crews.

This is an interesting image. I have never seen any of these Krauss-Maffei units in this particular configuration. Thanks for sharing.
