Crossing the swollen river
Title:  Crossing the swollen river
Description:  The NYSW ran trains for the Marathon Maple Festival for a number of years in the 80s and 90s, using whatever power was available and clean, usually Alcos, though in later years it was the 142 and a variety of SD 45s. This train had Alcos fore and aft, and we see D&H 5023, the one with the best paint, cleaned up and leading the first train for the 1989 weekend across the Chenango River, close to overflowing its banks due to spring runoff.

Heading to the train
Title:  Heading to the train
Description:  The Maple Festival trains were always well patronized-no surprise given the nightmare it was to park there on that weekend-and a good sized group is making their way to the station for the train about to depart for Cortland. NYSW has their office car on display, which they usually did at the festival.

Short train, big bridge
Title:  Short train, big bridge
Description:  I have always been impressed by the size of the through truss here. It dominates a stack train, and dwarfs this short passenger extra.

Title:  Great view
Description:  The riders on this train have a great view from the top of Starrucca Viaduct, 120 feet above Starrucca Creek. The view from down below isn't too bad either. The fourth car is PV Cimarron.

Alco power
Title:  Alco power
Description:  If you cant have a steam engine-that would be next years feature-an Alco works just fine. This is the north end of the Maple Festival train at Marathon, waiting to head back to Cortland with another load of well fed festival goers. NYSW 509, the "Popemobile," is on the north end of the train, though looks like the Pope is getting a really good look at the end of a C 430 on this trip.

A little close
Title:  A little close
Description:  This guy is following the rear car of the Utica & Mohawk Valley trip as it makes its way down Schuyler St in Utica. Hope hes apying attention. Imagine the call to his insurance agent if he rear ends the train. And if the Pope is in there when he hits, he's going straight to hell.
