Built by American Car & Foundry in 1935, this gas powered railbus began as Seaboard Air Line 2026. According to Wikipeida, it went from SAL to Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad #106 and then Salt Lake, Garfield & Western M.C. 3 in 1951. Finally, in 1963, it was purchased by California Western to serve the tourist line. CN 15950 - Experimental Canadian National Auto Railer |

A very rare look at one of presumably three experimental auto railers that Canadian National tested during the late 1930's. According to one newspaper account describing a live radio broadcast about the experimental railbus taking place on September 9, 1937, "This latest innovation in transportation facilities is being tested out by the Canadian National Railway with a view to developing its possiblities in the way of providing increased flexibility in railway passenger travel. A similar unit is in operation in Ontario and another is in western Canada. A freight unit of a similar type is also being experimented with." In the US, a similar auto railer was built by Chevrolet/Timken/Goodrich in 1935. An interesting Chevrolet video trailer from 1935 contains a short section on the Chevrolet version partway through the clip. Unusual looking crossover between a coach car, doodlebug, and bus spotted here in an open area in the Toronto yard. The original photo is attributed to Colin Menzies III collection as well as having been in the Pacific Western Rwy collection (operated by Union Lumber Co). Other than it being an oil-electric powered unit, not much background information could be found on this item. Thanks to Raymond Kennedy (see comment below) for providing new info - Built 11/1923 #15816, by National Steel Car Company. It was powered by a Sterling 6 cyclinder gass engine, contained 32 seats and was 54 feet long. Eventually scrapped in May of 1941. |

M131.1238 is an M131 Class railbus, later reclassified a Class 801 under the 1988 renumbering scheme. These units were produced from 1948 until 1956 by Tatra, eventually totalling 549 for the fleet, a very large number when you consider that none remain in service today, as all were withdrawn by 1984, a service lifespan of only 36 years, with some serving less than 30. Their small size may have had something to do with this, as they could only seat 48 people to a modern 810 Classs 55, plus 40 standees, along with their maximum speed of 60Km/h compared with 80Km/h for an 810. Other antiquated features would have been their mechanical transmissions (compared to the 810s hydraulic transmission), and their antiquated Tatra T 301 engines, which were based on the old Tatra T111 from Tatras World War II-era trucks, that in spite of having 14.8 liters displacement from 12 cylinders, only produced about 155-160 horsepower. |
