KCS F7 4053 |
Description: |
KCS F7 4053 at Heavener, Oklahoma on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Paul L. Strang, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4053 was built as L&A F3A 58D in March 1948 (c/n 4931), was renumbered to 85 on January 1, 1957, and renumbered again to 4053 on April 3, 1978, sold for scrap on September 9, 1986 to George T. Cook. It was rebuilt to F9 specifications on February 14, 1954, and rebuilt again on March 29, 1956. It's unclear if the rebuildings were upgrades or wreck repairs. It looks like they touched up a bit around the front door. Paul adds this; As I recall, the banding around the nose door occurred when it was welded shut. |

KCS Train No. 53 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern train 53 - running as Extra 657 South - was crossing the entrance to the Airline Drive-In Theater about a mile from its destination at New Orleans' WEST YARD. The second unit was F9Am 4053, and when this photo was taken, F-units and older geeps had recently began running with SD's on the line into New Orleans. I was told this was a fuel conservation measure, but it also released SD's for use elsewhere on the railroad. Before long, the usual power became a trio of newer geeps or a GP-slug-GP set. |

KCS F9Am 4053 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern F9Am 4053 was outside the diesel shop at West Yard, just west of New Orleans. The unit had been built as F7A 58D and was rebuilt by EMD in March 1956 after a head-on collision at Sulphur Springs, Texas. This rebuild explained the F9 louver arrangement and contributed to its longevity. It was scrapped in March 1986. |
