CNJ Southern Division |
Description: |
The former CNJ Southern Division, once the main line that hosted the Blue Comet, is now a backwater of the Conrail system. Here we look south from BANK tower, where the line leaves the NY & Long Branch, and heads for south Jersey. The track on the left is now cut, but the signals remain. A CR GP15-1 waits out the weeked to cover what freight remains on the line. Its sparse enough at this stage that the train is left on the main. |

Chemical Coast power |
Description: |
One of the more important locations on the Conrail system was the ex CNJ between Oak Island and Perth Amboy NJ, where many of the oil companies had refineries and chemical plants. Its the place that many think of when New Jersey is mentioned. Conrail generated a lot of revenue here, to the point of having two dedicated trains originate here daily at the time of this photo, CCAL to Allentown, and CCPI to Conway. Heres some of the local power that gathered all that traffic, as seen from the Jersey Turnpike. |

Hump power |
Description: |
A set of big power sits atop the Allentown hump. Road power was not typical for this assignment; it usually drew an SD38 and a 6 motor slug. |

Hump power |
Description: |
A look at the hump power at Allentown from the MT 6 end. These units were cut down mostly from Alcos and mated with ex PC SD 38s, and used as hump and switching power-some flat yards got them as well, among others, Frontier in Buffalo. |

Local working through the yard |
Description: |
A local with a B23-7 pulls its train into Allentown. I always liked this view of the yard. It looks like a model railroad, with all the different cars from different roads. The variety could sometimes be stunning. In this view, there are CR hoppers on the far track, some still in their PC and EL markings, as well as PC gons on the local. Note the Clinchfield car on the near track, and flatcars with tanks behind the train. |
