Title:  D&RGW VO-660 72
Description:  D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 72 was built in August 1941 (c/n 64186) and traded to EMD as credit on an order of SD45's on January 23, 1967. This Baldwin has just brought CB&Q's Denver Zephyr Colorado Springs Connection cars over from the D&RGW side of town to the Santa Fe side for the return trip to Denver. When the northboud Royal Gorge arrives, 72 will tack these cars onto the back of that train.

Title:  D&RGW VO-660 72
Description:  D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 72 has completed the transfer of these passenger cars from the D&RGW station to the AT&SF station. The windows are being washed for the return trip to Denver behind the D&RGW's Royal Gorge. These cars represent the Colorado Springs connection of the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr. Typically this consisted of a Slumbercoach, a Reclining Seat Chair car, and either the Chuck Wagon (Buffet service) Vista-Dome and/or a Vista-Dome Reclining Seat Chair car, depending on the passenger demand.

D&RGW VO-660 72
Title:  D&RGW VO-660 72
Description:  D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Perhaps this is a mixed train, but there are no revenue passengers carried, so more correctly, this is a switching move. The D&RGW Train #1, The Royal Gorge, had arrived and dropped off the passenger cars, seen at the end of this train (the closest car is a leased/borrowed Great Northern sleeper, business was good this day). This was the Chicago Burlington & Quincy's Denver Zephyr connection between Denver and Colorado Springs. Number 72 has completed the morning switching chores at the local industries, and has coupled up to the Denver Zephyr cars, and will move them to the other side of town. For those not familiar with Colorado Springs, the southbound tracks were on the west side of town, served by the D&RGW and Rock Island depot, and about a half mile to the east was the Santa Fe depot used for the northbound rail traffic, so this switching job included turning and transferring the Denver Zephyr cars from the southbound to the northbound side of town. Number 72 will tack the passenger cars onto the rear of D&RGW Train #2, The Royal Gorge, for the return trip to Denver, where they will be cut into the waiting CB&Q Train #10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr.

D&RGW Alco S2 114 and 117
Title:  D&RGW Alco S2 114 and 117
Description:  D&RGW Alco S2's 114 and 117 at Denver, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This photo was shot from an open door on Chicago Burlington & Quincy Train #10, The eastbound Denver Zephyr (DZ), as I was returning from a vacation with my parents in Colorado Springs. I had free access to a Dutch door on a Budd sleeper from Colorado Springs to Denver, because the Rio Grande crew was too pre-occupied with their part of the train to pay attention to me opening a door to shoot photos. But once the Colorado Springs connection was attached to the DZ at Denver, the CB&Q crew took over, and they frowned upon my opening the doors to shoot pictures, so this is the last shot I got.

D&RGW 1145
Title:  D&RGW 1145
Description:  D&RGW 1145, named SILVER SKY at Aurora, Illinois on November 1, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car, built in 1948, is bringing up the rear of Train #18, the eastbound California Zephyr, pausing for a station stop at Aurora. The following is from internet search which took me to trainweb.org: D&RGW 1145 - "Silver Sky", sleeper-observation, remodeled 1974 - bedrooms removed, Equus Farms/Ansco Investments (11/87) (800711), VIA 15519 "Jasper Park" (not applied) (12/87) in a deal that brought ex CN/VIA "Tempo" coaches for Ski Train use - stored "inactive" in Montreal (2000) - sold late 2003/early 2004 to Bill Harman. Moved to storage in Saginaw Michigan for eventual charter use. Unfortunately, this car has suffered a tragic fate that has befallen two (so far) of it's sisters. When VIA acquired the car, they completely stripped it inside and out for a complete rebuild and conversion back to a dome sleeper obs (Rio Grande had removed bedrooms B,C, and D for conversion to additional lounge space and Room A became a large restroom). The skirts were removed and VIA started adding walls where the bedrooms were going to be. The idea was to make it match the "Park" cars as close as possible. Well, as usual, the political winds shifted and VIA experienced budget cuts. Since they were going to be running less trains, they didn't need as many dome obs cars, so the car was shoved outside so it could fill up with snow. (The windows were a long way from being reinstalled). So it sits today, a semi-gutted shell, in Montreal, along with other completely gutted ex-US domes like Silver Patio. (narrative courtesy Jon Clark).

Title:  D&RGW GP30 3010
Description:  D&RGW GP30 3010 at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on July 29, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3010 was built in May 1962 (c/n 27144), wrecked and destroyed at Cliff, Colorado on September 30, 1991. This was run through power on the CB&Q, I don't know how long this arrangement lasted, but I photographed a couple of these D&RGW-powered trains in 1965.

Description:  D&RGW GP30 3022 westbound at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on April 11, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This photo was used in Joseph A. Strapac's book, "Rio Grande Diesels - Vol. 2", and he captioned it as follows; It's April 11, 1966 in Naperville, Illinois, and the Burlington - Rio Grande diesel pool is in full swing. As evidence, here is an all-GP-30 locomotive consist led by Grande 3022 and 3005, followed by three Union Pacific GP-30's and a GP-30B. Units were pooled between Salt Lake City and Chicago, but the Grande accumulated more off-line mileage than was returned by the Q units.

Title:  D&RGW GP30 3025
Description:  D&RGW GP30 3025 westbound at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on August 5, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I heard a horn unlike those on the CB&Q, so I ran into the house to get my camera, by the time I got back, the train was passing through and this is the best I could get. Number 3025 was built in February 1963 (c/n 28054) on EMD Order 7640 and was destroyed at Byers Canyon, August 7, 1982. This was part of a pooled power arrangement the CB&Q and D&RGW had in the 1960's.

Title:  D&RGW GP35 3039
Description:  D&RGW GP35 3039 at Salida, Colorado on August 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3039 was built in December 1964 (c/n 29964) on EMD Order 7776, was retired by the D&RGW (or pehaps, the SP) December 1993, later becoming MLR 403. I observed a peculiar situation. perhaps. Trains arriving from the east carried green flags, and removed them upon arriving at Salida. This train arrived without green flags, but will leave Salida eastbound with green flags displayed. A Comment by Rick Erben suggests that perhaps this train is leaving CTC-controlled track.

Description:  D&RGW SD40T-2 5408 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1980, so I'm going to suggest that it was just picked up from EMD and is on its way to home rails.

D&RGW F3 5531
Title:  D&RGW F3 5531
Description:  D&RGW F-3 5531 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1946 as D&RGW F3 553A (c/n 3546) on EMD Order E692, it was renumbered to 5531 during 1950. The appearance of this F3 may be confusing, and on page 56 of Joseph A Strapac's book, "Rio Grande Diesels, A Pictorial History - Vol. 1", he explains: "The most interesting of the F3's was this rebuild. Number 5531 was wrecked at Dos, Colorado, on November 20, 1953, and was sent back to EMD for a totally new carbody featuring the then-current rounded door corners, F9 side panels, and Farr-air grills. Considered a F9m by EMD, it carried all the latest electrical gear, but was still rated at 1500 horsepower. The F3, F7, and F9 roof fan modules were interchangeable." I believe this is Train #7, The Prospector, scheduled to depart Denver at 6:25 PM, arriving at Salt Lake City at 8:40 AM. Included in the consist is a cafe-lounge car, standard sleepers, and chair cars.

Title:  D&RGW F3 5544
Description:  D&RGW F3 5544 at Denver Union Station, Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Completed on November 29, 1946 as D&RGW F3 554D (c/n 3549) on EMD Order E692, it was renumbered to 5544 during 1950, retired in December 1965, and traded to EMD as credit on an order of GP40's. This is likely power for the soon to arrive California Zephyr, replacing the CB&Q E-units, and taking the CZ to Salt Lake City, where these units will be replaced by Western Pacific F-units.

D&RGW F7 5654
Title:  D&RGW F7 5654
Description:  D&RGW F7 5654 and T&P E8 33 at Denver Union Station on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5654 was built in June 1950 (c/n 11406) on EMD Order 6093, sold to Alaska Railroad during May 1970, becoming ARR 1530, was wrecked in 1975, rebuilt in 1976, retired in 1986, sent to Mountain Diesel and scrapped during 1990. Here's a quote from Joseph A. Strapac's book, Rio Grande Diesels - Vol. 1:

Rio Grande passenger trains #3 and #4 were in actuality a contract service for the Missouri Pacific so that its 'Colorado Eagle' train could reach Denver, rather than terminate with the MP freight trains in Pueblo, Colorado. Ready for its afternoon departure to Saint Louis, the seven car train will go out on August 20, 1964 behind D&RGW 5654 and Texas & Pacific's 1951-vintage E8 33." Texas & Pacific's E8 33 was built in August 1951 as number 2013 (c/n 14558) on EMD Order 6104, renumbered around 1961 as 33 to fit into MP's scheme, retired in March 1970 and traded to EMD for SD40's.

Title:  D&RGW F9 5774
Description:  D&RGW F9 5774 at Salida, Colorado on August 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5774 was built in September 1955 (c/n 20528) on EMD Order 3184 and was wrecked at Grizzly, Colorado on March 29, 1968, during May 1969 was sent to Precision National in Mount Vernon, Illinois and scrapped. It is seen paired with PA1 6011 about to couple onto its train after running around the two cars it arrived with in Salida as Train #1, The Royal Gorge and will depart as Train #2, The Royal Gorge at 9:00 AM the next day. The Royal Gorge (RG) departed Denver at 9:00 AM MST with cars from CB&Q's Denver Zephyr (DZ) attached on the rear. Upon arrival at Colorado Springs (10:40 AM) the DZ cars were cut off and the RG continued on to Salida, arriving at 3:15 PM. Meanwhile, the returning RG had left Salida at 9:00 AM, will arrive in Colorado Springs at 1:10 PM where the DZ cars will be attached to the rear, and will continue on to Denver, arriving at 3:00 PM. The DZ cars will be removed and cut into the waiting DZ for return to Chicago overnight. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, the RG was listed as having a Chair Car between Denver and Salida. Also listed was a Standard Sleeper, a Slumbercoach, and a Vista-Dome Chair Car between Denver and Colorado Springs, the DZ cars.

D&RGW PA1 6001
Title:  D&RGW PA1 6001
Description:  D&RGW VO-660 72 and PA1 6001 at Colorado Springs, Colorado, August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The switcher will pick up the cars setout after the first dome in this photo. This is Train #1 on both the CB&Q and D&RGW. The Rio Grande's Number 1, The Royal Gorge, will continue west and the switcher will put the setout cars onto the back of their freight cars and drag them over to the other side of town, a true mixed train. This is how the CB&Q managed the Colorado Springs Connection. It wasn't a bad deal; you got to ride all the way from Chicago to Colorado Springs without leaving your bedroom compartment on the train. You were assured of meal service because the CB&Q sent their Chuck Wagon dome diner along on the connection from Denver to Colorado Springs. They generally switched 3-4 cars to the Rio Grande's #1 to get them moved to Colorado Springs. I had the pleasure of that trip when I was 16. Sadly, I did not get to enjoy a ride on the mixed train, but my parents indulged me enough to get a couple of photos, here's one.
