Album Info:The Commerce, GA branch pulls off the NS ex Southern Mainline between Atlanta and Washington DC at Lula, GA and works south to Commerce and down to Athens, GA. The line was a CofGA secondary that linked Lula all the way to Macon, but over the years much of the line was sold or abandoned. NS still works the branch out of Gainesville, GA with the two principal industry being a car distribution facility and GoldKist feed distributor. In the 1990s, NS still used the robot cars made famous by Southern Railway, and grain trains still warranted midtrain units to reduce train forces in the heavy cuts. I worked on a T&S gang for a year with NS. We worked through Gainesville and I got to take a few pictures along the way. For those who like the era before wide cabs and the last remnants of Radio Control car operations, here is a set of a GoldlKist hopper train getting ready to spot loads at the Commerce, GA distribution elevator. The train had to wait for the GoldKist folks to come back and move the critter out of the way, as it was blocking one of the two tracks the train was to be doubled into, much to the chagrin of a crew who wanted to head back to Lula and go off duty.
