SOU FTA 6103 |
Description: |
Southern Railway 6103 led an A-B-A set of FT units and a caboose eastbound (timetable north) at the Elysian Fields Avenue grade crossing on the railroad’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary. The engines and cab were on their way from the roundhouse on North Scott Street, near BERNADOTTE YARD, to pick up a train at PRESS STREET YARD. Up until 1935 the NO&NE crossed the Pontchartrain Railroad – a subsidiary of the Louisville & Nashville – at this location. The Southern built a diesel shop at PRESS STREET YARD about two years after this photo was taken, ending moves like this; and the grade crossing here was replaced by an overpass at about the same time. Southern No. 193 |
Description: |
Southern Railway No. 193 – the run-though train with the Southern Pacific between Birmingham and Houston – was cresting the 5-mile-long grade at Richburg Hill, south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Today’s train was a bit unusual because it had three big Espee General Electric units – U30C 7903 with U33C’s 8669 and 8729 – and they were all running backwards. The Southern was well-known for running its own locomotives long-hood forward, but this was a really rare sight. The sound of those big U-boats working uphill was 120 cars, long before they showed up, was amazing! |

The train is parked on the spur that served the American Standard plumbing fixture plant, just west of the Seabrook drawbridge. Southern SD45 3154 |
Description: |
For many years, the locomotives that arrived in New Orleans on the Southern Railway's southbound piggyback train No. 219 went back out on northbound No. 222. This usually worked well, but if No. 219 was running late, the railroad would take one or two locally-assigned geeps and head out with No. 222. When the two trains met, they would swap locomotives, and everything would return to normal. On this day, the local unit - GP38 2736 - only had to go five miles with No. 222 before it met No. 219 at the Airport crossover. Here, No. 219's power - SD45 3154H and 3169A, and SD35 3061X - has uncoupled from its train and is pulling up next to the 2736. The crews will swap engines, the engines will swap trains, and then both trains will be on their way. The drawbridge in the background crosses the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal at Milepost 190.6. |

Amtrak No. 20 |
Description: |
Just 10 days after Amtrak took over operation of the CRESCENT, train No. 20 cast its reflection in a trackside puddle while making its station stop and being watered at Meridian. The train consisted of E8A's 6909, 6913 and 6905 with nine cars: baggage-dormitory car 1406, coaches 817, 5285 and 844, coach-lounge 3850, diner 8382, and 10-6 sleepers 2002 DAN RIVER, 2860 TYE RIVER and 2862 FRENCH BROAD RIVER. Except for the Amtrak baggage-dormitory car and the ex-Southern coach-lounge, the train looks much as it did when it was the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. Cars 5285, 3850, 8382, 2860 and 2862 were lettered SOUTHERN but wore Amtrak numbers, while car 817, 844 and 2002 still had their Southern lettering and numbers. |

Southern Geeps |
Description: |
Southern Railway GP7 8252 and GP9 6263 were on the West Tie-Up Track at the railroad's OLIVER YARD in New Orleans. These geeps had replaced NW2's in yard and transfer service around the New Orleans area, and were themselves replaced by new MP15DC units in 1982. The 8252 had been built in 1951 as the 2157 and was sold for scrap in 1981, at which time it was replaced here by a GP9. The empty space between the trucks - on each side of the unit - had been occupied by a pair of 400-gallon water tanks when it had a steam generator, but it still had an 800-gallon fuel tank along the centerline of the unit. GP9 6263 had been built in 1956 as Central of Georgia 164, and it was sold for scrap in 1983. |

Marconi Drive Underpass |
Description: |
The Marconi Drive Underpass (on the left) was one of about two dozen grade separations constructed as a part of the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal project. This one was on the Southern Railway’s NEW ORLEANS TERMINAL CO. subsidiary and was dedicated in June 1953. With the proliferation of run-through trains in the late twentieth century it became a convenient place for westbound trains to wait for clearance through EAST BRIDGE JUNCTION and onto the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE; but around 2000 it became the official crew change location for trains moving from the CSX and NS to the UP, as this eliminated the need to stop trains at the foot of the bridge which blocked both rail and road traffic. Someone even constructed stairs for easy access to the tracks. The train was NS No. 393 with C40-9W 8918, C40-8 8707 and UP GP60 5842 waiting for a UP crew, and the structure on the right is a pumping station which usually prevents the underpass from flooding. |
