New Glarus was famous for its cheese and dairy farms. Somewhere, lost to history, the branch was known to locals as the "Limburger Special".... a name derived from a particular flavor of cheese. This photo is the last trip from New Glarus. Rails first reached New Glarus in 1887. Bob Dorr photo |

Description: |
The last trip on the New Glarus branch. Crossing the IC Madison branch at Monticello. In the early 1960's, the Milwaukee Road proposed abandoning the branch between Brodhead and Monticello and securing trackage rights over the IC Madison district to serve Monticello and New Glarus. But, in 1962, Pet Milk announced the closing of their New Glarus plant and rail business fell quickly after that. Bob Dorr photo |

Milwaukee Road 543 |
Description: |
South of Mineral Point at Slateford. Slateford was nothing more than a widespot in the road, but up until the early 1970's, would ship cattle. Less that a mile north of Slateford, was Highland Jct....the point where the Mineral Point & Northern left Milwaukee Road trackage and ran to Highland. The MP&N shared the Mineral Point depot and turntable with the Milwaukee Road, but had their own 2 stall engine house. The MP&N was abandoned in 1930. This train out of Mineral Point consists of 5 91751 series hoppers used to bring in sand and gravel for Ivey Construction. |

Milwaukee 543 |
Description: |
Ready to leave Mineral Point. In the late 1970s, the Milwaukee reduced service west of Monroe to once a week...out Saturday and back Sunday. The Mineral Point depot is the oldest in Wisconsin...built in 1856. It has been restored and is now an outstanding museum. The Mineral Point & Northern used the upper floor of the depot for dispatching and offices. The MP&N shared A turntable with the Milwaukee Road, but had their own 2 stall engine house! The turntable and the Milwaukee's 2 stall engine house were removed in the late 1950's. This train had an empty hopper pulled from Ivey Construction in Mineral Point and 3 empty fertilizer cars from Calamine. |
