Description:  On the days 166 didnt run, CP had a train pair that ran Buffalo-Binghamton with carload freight. It had several symbols over the years, but the westbound was always 39T on NS. Here we see it from the new bridge over the Susquehanna at Campville.

Title:  167, or is it F1G??
Description:  After NS took over running what had been trains 166 and 167, there were some symbol changes, though it took a while for them to become permanent. In the meanwhile, they sometimes took on NS alphabet soup symbols. They called this on F1G, seen here coming around the curve past the old Erie station.

Description:  CP 421 was the train that ran to Buffalo the days 167 didnt run. Todays version has three SOO SD60s not that unusual at the time. Here they split the signals at MP 228 in Campville. Note the traffic light signal on track 2. This was installed in preparation for single tracking the line, which NS would not accomplish for almost another 10 years.

Description:  One of the less seen locations is between Chemung and Wellsburg, along NY 427. Its easy enough to get to, you just have to pass up the easy overhead shot at Chemung-or get it and go like hell to beat the train there, and hope there are no slowpokes.

Title:  Under the signals
Description:  CP 167 rolls 101 cars under the signals at Johnson, while 41T waits out of the photo at right. This was West BD on EL and for the first dozen or so years of Conrail. NS has installed new PTC compatible signals, as well as single tracking the line from here to Owego. The track in the foreground is the Vestal Spur, once the DLW main to Buffalo, and at this date-June 2016-with a clouded future.

Description:  And its right next to a grade crossing. This small wetland is adjacent to the Goodrich Settlement Rd crossing, abound a mile or so west of Owego. Good spot all year, but hard to park since theres no shoulder. Were looking at CP train 167 rolling west with 101 cars.

Title:  Mismatch
Description:  As NS prepared to single track the Tier, a project that would not come to fruition for another dozen years, it was replacing signals on the line. There were still a few semaphores, though by this time you could count them on the fingers of one hand. Some of the older target signals also got replaced, among them the eastbound signal on track 2, which had originally been about 1/4 mile farther east. It was replaced by this "Darth Vader" type, which was placed across from the target that stayed here in Campville. We see CP 167 rolling past in the snow of a January day.

Description:  From my house in Campville, I could usually hear eastbounds blowing for the crossings on the east side of Owego, making it possible to get to Kinney Rd for a shot. The view was well lit-when the sun was out-and the hillside in the background made a nice backdrop. We see train 166 rolling east behind a SOO leader.

Description:  Train 419-it ran to Buffalo and Toronto the days 167 didnt run, though this day'seffort still has 18 stack platforms along with its 112 cars-rolls west along the George F Highway and the Erie pole line into the afternoon sun. NS would single track this ten years later, and remove the poles. It opened up the shot, but took away one of the things that made this line interesting.

Description:  CP 167 passes the site of Eries OG tower. It guarded the crossing of the DLW Ithaca Branch, which intersected first the Erie, approximately where the McMaster St pedestrian crossing is located-see the gates in front of the third car, then the LV Auburn Branch. The Ithaca Branch left the DLW main just west of the Owego station, which was located where the off ramp for exit 64 off westbuond NY 17 is now.

Description:  Peeking out from behind the bushes at west Endicott is this 96 car 166, it's three SD 40-2's elephant style, or as CP calls it, "in tandem." They are almost to the end of this leg of the trip at Binghamton.

Description:  Its one of my favorite spots, but the Tier gloom sometimes can even make a pretty spot dull. The red CP power helps, though, as 419 works west along the Susquehanna with three CPs and a SOO unit and 48 cars.
