Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Spring 2018
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
3/20/2018 - 6/20/2018
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 5286
Description:
A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) via former SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. George Banta, Sr. continued on as President; George, Jr., assumed the role in ’35 after his father passed away. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. Looking east from De Pere St., I was standing at the approximate site where the MILW rails crossed De Pere St.

Description:
A CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. It is awesome to see this many cars in the yard, it doesn't look like this very often these days. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

A CN local crosses Racine St. while it works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 May '18. Milepost 2 can be seen on both sides of the locomotive, a newer marker on a metal fence post to the right of the tracks, and an older, faded marker on the telephone pole to the left of the tracks. You don't see 6-axle units on this line very often, the last time I photographed one was 11 Aug. '14. The facility partially visible at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. The tan building at left is the City Limits tavern or bar and grill, 544 4th St., Menasha, WI. The building was erected in 1960 for the local chapter of the Polish Falcons of America. At left, a pair of trespassers nonchalantly stroll alongside the train.

The former Dave's Burger Shanty is partially visible at left, it has been home to a couple of short-lived restaurants since those good-old-days. The operators of a food truck recently acquired the property for storage and food preparation. I am not a fan of the ongoing food truck craze.

Description:
This interesting gondola was part of the consist of a CN through freight passing Kampo Rd. as it headed northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 7 May '18. The BAYL was created after Rail Management Corp. acquired the ASAB from the Stone Container Corp. in 1994. It has been owned by Genesee & Wyoming since 1 Jun. '05. I was intrigued by the fact that a car of this age has somehow avoided vandalism.

IC 3107
Description:
A CN local pulls 12 cars west through The Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 12 May '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The bridge crosses the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through the Flats. South Island St. (which I was standing on) used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and ‘57. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. Up until about 2010, everything beyond the train would have been obscured by the paper mill which stood there for over 100 years. The Kerwin Paper Co., a subsidiary of Riverside Paper Corp., closed in ‘05 or ’06. It was demolished in order to erect the hideous, modern apartment buildings, known as the Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, in ‘11-‘12 (both are just out-of-frame to the right). The white, concrete wall beyond the train is a remnant of the paper mill’s foundation. The bridge tender’s tower for the Lawe St. bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal can be seen near the center of the photograph. The recently restored lock tender’s house can be seen background right.

Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on other side of the train. The facility at left has an indoor spur, but I don't know if it is currently used.

Train had four locomotives, CN 8803, CN 8912, NS 8033, NS 2688. The former SOO main line is in the foreground. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks. It looks like it might replace an existing turnout for the former C&NW passing siding.

The former SOO main line runs parallel on this side of the train. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks (at left). It looks like it might replace an existing turnout for the former C&NW passing siding. There are spurs for the two warehouses in the background, but the turnout that connected them to the siding has been gone for years.

Description:
A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. This grade crossing was removed ca. the 3rd week of Nov. '13. The large building in the background at left is the former H. C. Prange Co. (a.k.a. Prange's) department store, 126 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI. The drab, utilitarian structure was erected ca. 1961, replacing the historic and beautiful Pettibone-Peabody Co. department store (H. C. Prange purchased the company in ‘46). It is currently home to City Hall and a children's museum. A pair of tall buildings loom above the locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St., Appleton, WI. The taller one is the former Aid Association of Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, erected in 1952. After AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building.

A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the Main St. overpass as it leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. The north leg of the wye can be seen near the bottom of the photograph. In the foreground, fill is being added to a portion of the park in preparation for future improvements to the park. The front facade of the remaining portion of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.

Description:
A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 May '18. A fellow train nut and I were enjoying an evening picnic (tasty vittles from the nearby Tom's Drive In) on the tail gate of his pickup truck, waiting to photograph passing trains. This train approaches, we grab our cameras, start shooting, and start to wonder why the engineer is laying on the horn. As our gaze follows the train as it passes us, we notice the reason for the horn. A moronic, trespassing, fat, old, grotesquely-bulging-spandex-clad, ersatz Lance Armstrong is dragging his bicycle across the tracks at the former Byrd Ave. grade crossing, right in front of the rapidly approaching freight train. When the engineer blew the horn, the moron flipped off the train crew and offered us a smug, arrogant grin while we stared in disbelief as he waddled away.

Description:
A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 20 May '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map).
